Ever wonder what claims are commonly denied on Home policies? Wonder no further! While some policies offer endorsements for these specific incidents, most policies do not include coverage for them.
- Flood/Movement of Earth – Damage from exterior water, storm surges, and flash floods are not covered under regular Home policies. Neither are earthquakes, landslides, or sinkholes! These incidents typically need an endorsement or a separate policy to provide coverage.
- Wear and Tear/Lack of Maintenance – Insurance is here for sudden, accidental issues. This means that things that occur gradually are typically not covered!
- Mold and Infestations – Mold typically is not covered unless it happened suddenly after a covered loss. Damage caused by unwanted guests like rodents and insects is also typically not covered either.
- Intentional/Illegal Acts of the Homeowner/Household Members – Even if you’re not the one who committed the act intentionally or illegally, these incidents are typically denied!
- Business Conducted on the Premises – If you run a business out of your home, it is typically not covered under your Personal insurance. If you host clients, store business inventory in your home, or rent out rooms of your home, you typically need another policy or an endorsement for the Business exposure on your property.
What do you do if you’re worried about these things not being covered? Check with your agent!
Often times there are endorsements available or policies that we can shop for that fill these gaps. It’s always better to be prepared for a potential loss before claim time happens!
