Prepare for Winter Weather! Steps you can take to ensure your home is protected against the cold.
Clear gutters of fallen leaves and other debris.
Disconnect and drain garden hoses. Ensure that their water supply is turned off. Insulate their spigots, and any exposed pipes whether they are outside or in the basement/garage.
Seal drafty windows or doors with weatherstripping or caulk.
Have a professional check your furnace annually, and ensure that you are changing your furnace’s filter once every three months.
Set ceiling fans’ rotations to clockwise, as this pushes your warm air down.
Test your smoke and CO detectors, make sure their batteries are full.
Check your fireplace! Before your first fire of the season, have an inspection done. Vacuum or sweep out any ash that’s gathered in your firebox.
Bring in fragile plants before the first cold snap. (Flowering trees may need to come inside too!)
If possible, bring your grill and outdoor furniture into a protected space like your garage. Make sure that you close the tank valve and disconnect the tank first if you have a gas grill.
