Winter-Proofing Your Home

Prepare for Winter Weather! Steps you can take to ensure your home is protected against the cold.

🍂 Clear gutters of fallen leaves and other debris.

💧 Disconnect and drain garden hoses. Ensure that their water supply is turned off. Insulate their spigots, and any exposed pipes whether they are outside or in the basement/garage.

🌨️ Seal drafty windows or doors with weatherstripping or caulk.

🔥 Have a professional check your furnace annually, and ensure that you are changing your furnace’s filter once every three months.

💨 Set ceiling fans’ rotations to clockwise, as this pushes your warm air down.

🔋 Test your smoke and CO detectors, make sure their batteries are full.

🪵 Check your fireplace! Before your first fire of the season, have an inspection done. Vacuum or sweep out any ash that’s gathered in your firebox.

🌱 Bring in fragile plants before the first cold snap. (Flowering trees may need to come inside too!)

🍢 If possible, bring your grill and outdoor furniture into a protected space like your garage. Make sure that you close the tank valve and disconnect the tank first if you have a gas grill.
